Our Work

Since 1972, the Group has led the way in protecting and restoring the environment of eastern Long Island through education, conservation, and advocacy. We fight for the protection of our land, water, and wildlife, we inspire children to become stewards of the environment, and we engage the community to embrace a conservation ethic and take action.

Advocacy

Working with fellow environmental groups, civic organizations, and concerned citizens, we push local governments to rethink development proposals, overhaul zoning codes, and adopt responsible land-use policies. We think out of the box to find long-term funding solutions for the East End’s most daunting environmental problems and we engage people to speak up and take action in their community.

Conservation

Imagine the East End without ospreys, oysters, and turtles. Without woodlands, wetlands, and farms. Bays too polluted for fishing and swimming. We can’t imagine. That’s why we lead projects to protect and restore habitats, and raise awareness about threats to the environment. The Group’s efforts are part of the collective fight against global warming.

Education

Through our partnerships with public and private schools, students learn to appreciate and respect all things natural on the East End. During our popular nature outings, we put away our phones so we can listen, explore, and discover.

Current Initiatives

We are actively engaged in advocacy, conservation, and education initiatives that have a positive impact our local environment, economy, and quality of life.

Environmental Victories

What would the East End look like if the Group had not been here for the last 50 years? We shudder to think…

History

It all started in1972 when the Group’s founders understood that the protection of our most significant natural resources would be the cornerstone of a sustainable future.
