Preservation of 40+ Acres in Montauk

Atlantic Headland, an undeveloped 40+ acre lot on the Atlantic Ocean in Montauk, is under consideration for a two-lot subdivision.

From surfers, fishermen, and beachgoers to photographers, writers, and painters, Montauk has long called people to its shores. A unique landscape that serves as a place to enjoy nature and find inspiration, Montauk is also of great ecological importance as it provides critical habitat to countless animal and plant species.

Recognizing the value of these diminishing spaces, the Group is committed to working with the Town of East Hampton and conservation partners to press for public acquisition of this irreplaceable 40+ acre parcel.

Located on the bluffs and situated in habitat known as the Moorlands of Montauk Point, this site contains acres of sensitive wetlands, and has been classified by the New York State Department of State (DOS) as being located in a “Significant Coastal Fish and Wildlife Habitat,” Local Significant Coastal Fish and Wildlife Habitat, US Fish and Wildlife Significant Ecological Complex, Peconic Estuary Program Critical Natural Resource Area, and in a Scenic Area of Statewide Significance. The property also abuts New York State parkland, and is home to the spotted turtle, a species of “Special Concern” in New York State.

Though currently under private ownership, the property has also provided public beach access to surfers and beachgoers for more than a decade.

The Town of East Hampton’s Community Preservation Plan’s list of open space parcels for acquisition includes this special Montauk property. Preservation would protect wetlands and wildlife and promote coastal resiliency.

What You Can Do
Join the Group in urging the East Hampton Town Board to acquire and preserve this environmentally fragile and ecologically important property in Montauk. Stay tuned for Planning Board meetings in early 2026 as the subdivision proposal continues to be reviewed.
