Cairn Building and Stone Matching

BY GROUP FOR THE EAST END STAFF

cairn building

Cairn found along Long Island Sound on the North Fork.

A cairn is a pile of stones created for ceremonial purposes or to mark a trail or burial ground. You may have seen these while walking on the beach or along nature trails. For a fun challenge, try building one of your own, stacking as many rocks as you can on top of each other without them toppling over! How many rocks can you stack?

While you’re out looking for rocks and stones to build your cairn, can you match stones to minerals? Take this handy graphic with you and see how many you can find!

Share your cairn creations and discoveries with the Group by tagging us on social media and using #GFEEoutside!
